What Is Eugenics?

I was asking some of my work colleagues if they had heard of "Eugenics"? Surprisingly, most replied that they hadn't. One thought it was some form of religion and another a special diet used by celebrities.....wrong....

According to Wilkepedia, and in it's most simplist form,

"Eugenics is "the study of, or belief in, the possibility of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population by such means as discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects or presumed to have inheritable undesirable traits (negative eugenics) or encouraging reproduction by persons presumed to have inheritable desirable traits (positive eugenics)."

Now that's something to think about...talk about conspiracies. Apparently eugenics was a popular idea in the early 20th century...think Nazis for example....but they weren't the only ones. Eugenics was practiced in many places throughout the world, and promoted by governments. It was actually thought to be a good thing and it would improve society and the world in general if only the best were allowed to propagate....that's essentially what we are talking about. It's a little like modern day genetics, but before they had the science worked out.

At the time, promoters of the idea, were all for encouraging the persons that that they figured to be the best to reproduce, while discouraging reproduction in those they deemed less worthy. The premise was that it was better to reproduce the "best" through the development of hereditary traits, and from that I mean the traits that the persons in charge felt were important, or worthy hereditary traits.

Of course mainstream society today would blanche at such a notion, or at least that would be the public stance on such an idea. To encourage only the rich, the 'smart' the gifted to reproduce, to impinge, or forbid reproduction by others would be unheard of today....or would it? Let's not forget Hilter and his Nazi's who had their own solution for their particular brand of eugenics which included things like forced sterilization, euthenasia, and of course their 'final solution.' That wasn't that long ago. That was a form of eugenics in an extreme manner.

But is it that much of a stretch today? Why are men, women and children starving in places like Africa, while other countries stand by, only providing what could be termed minimal support and assistance. Why aren't world governments stepping in to help, not just pay lip service but actually help the destitute and the hungry?

Instead they leave much of the relief work to volunteer agencies. Sure, they commiserate and offer some forms of aid, but solutions, real solutions from governments usually fall short.

Of course economics are often used as an excuse. There is no money to assist, no food, no medicine to offer. Yet, professional sports players, actors, celebrities, and of course, captains of industry are paid enough to feed entire villages, if not entire countries. Food is often allowed to waste and spoil if the price isn't high enough, if the economic return is not enough for large companies to turn a profit.

Certain diseases run rampant through peoples and countries, with no cure found until it reaches the shores of other more affuent countries. Disasters like AIDs are allowed to spread because of religious ideologies like the Church forbidding the use of contraception.

I think and read a good deal about conspiracies theories and about secret organizations controlling world events and hidden agendas and the more I do, the more I believe. And what I believe is that there are things going on around us, that most people don't know, don't think about and never question.

So the next time you see a program on television about children starving in some far away place, and even natural disasters like yes, even the flooding in New Orleans, ask yourself, is that just happenstance and bad luck? Or is it eugenics at work?

Eugenics is far from new. It's been around for a long time, perhaps forever, and it has a role in things like Darwin's Natural Selection, and in the other areas, like breeding purebred animals, like dogs and horses. The weak and the sickly, are not allowed to live, certainly not allowed to reproduce.

On some level, it's arguable that eugenics is an idea that is not without merit on some level. But what level? And who decides? Is it OK to practice in situations where medical reasons make it impractical for someone to reproduce, or in situations where parents would not be able to safely and effectively bring up their offspring? In cases of mentally challenged individuals? Or persons with hereditary conditions that will undoubtly carry on to their children?

I am not knowledgable enough about any of this to answer any of these questions, nor would I try. My role in writing this is to make you aware that such a thing exists, if you weren't already, and hopefully to make you think about it because....like UFO's and secret agendas....

...it's out there.

Wherever there is fiction, there is always some truth.
