I watched the new ABC television show "V" tonight for the first time. In fact, I guess this was the first show, tonight, four episodes of V will be on in November of this year, (2009), and then series will resume in March 2010. This is actually a new version of a 1983 two-part science fiction television miniseries.
Created by writer, director Kenneth Johnson V is kind of interesting in a sci-fi way, and to some degree in a mysterious societies way of looking at things. The premise is that giant spaceships appear over 29 major cities of the world, claiming to come in peace. They refer to themselves as "Visitors" hence the symbol "V"
The Visitor's leader is a beautiful woman, Anna, who immediately is liked by the earth folks....However, as things progress and the newcomers cure a bunch of diseases, winning the hearts and minds of the populace, an FBI counter-terrrorism agent discovers that they, the Visitors, have actually been on Earth for decades, infiltrating governments and businesses and are planning to take over the world.....sound familiar? Sound anything like the "Illuminati" stories? A group intent on infiltrating the top echelons of the world, to control it to their own ends, doing good things to hide the other not-so-good things they are doing...yup...sounds familiar.....
Interesting to me, a Wilkipedia entry describes V as an allegory to the Nazi's, from the swastika like emblem of the V to their uniforms and how they organize youth into supporters, like the Nazi Youth program. It even delves into the idea of some folks collaborating and others resisting through underground organizations.
I have always believed that some of the things that find their way to popular culture, like this, are attempts to prepare us for something to come, to guage the reaction of the world to something like this, and to create some awareness and some ideas of what might happen if we did suddenly recieve a visit from aliens from other planets. Now, to be honest, that might just be because the alien idea is a popular idea in our culture, and modern film media can do wonders with science fiction ideas, making things look very real. That might be all the impetus an imaginative mind needs to create something like V or other such shows. On the other hand, history repeats itself, so someone could take an idea like the Nazi's and bring it to the future, creating the idea of a master race from another world etc etc....
Still, I do believe that much of what comes to us through television and movies is a way of preparing us, giving us a glimpse of what might be out there, and at the same time, watching our reaction to it. Just a thought....that's all......The official website for V is Here
