I have written about the skull and crossed bones symbol and it's relationship to secret societies before, not to mention it's use by pirates. In fact, it is of course best known as the 'pirate flag' in most circles where folks have no knowledge of the secret societies aspect.
I came across an interesting article called Memento Mori, The Symbol of The Skull With Crossed Bones written by William Steve Burkle KT, at Pietre-Stones that you will find interesting.
The author explores the use of the skull and crossed bones in history, and it's eventual adoption by Freemasonary and it's symbolism, particularly concerning mortality. According to the author, the symbol of the skull and crossed bones is called the Memento Mori, which he says is latin for something along the lines of "remember you must die" which of course is something we all should keep in mind. It might also explain why the symbol was popular amongst the pirate crowd, as it might strike some fear into those familiar with it's meaning.
