This isn't exactly about a mysterious society like the Masons, the Illuminati or the Knights Templar, but it's a mystery nonetheless.
In 1863 in a little seaport on the coast of Nova Scotia, a man was found on the shoreline. His legs had been amputated above the knee and wrapped in bandages. He either couldn't or wouldn't speak, and for the most part, maintained his silence until he died in 1912, taking the answer to how he arrived on the shoreline with him to the grave.
The Nova Scotian folks who took him in, somehow arrived at calling him "Jerome" which he must have managed to say, or at least something close to that. He lived with several families until his death.
When Jerome was found, he was dressed in good clothes, similiar to a ship's officer's uniform, and his hands spoke of a gentleman, not one used to hard manual labour. The clothes however, didn't display any badges or crests that might signify a ship's officer.
While he lived out his life, he was apparently visited by a couple of women from the United States who came and apparently spoke with him, but left rather abruptly. Legend says he had some other visitors from outside of Nova Scotia, but all left without giving away the reason for their visit, or anything about him.
As I said, Jerome took his secrets to the grave but his legend lived on in the hearts and minds of the folks who cared for him and their ancestors. The reason why he turned up on the shore of Nova Scotia, with no legs, and only a bottle of water and some bread remain a mystery to this day. One of the great unsolved mysteries.
